Ammonium sulphate, with the chemical formula (NH₄)₂SO₄, is an inorganic salt widely known as a high-efficiency nitrogen fertiliser. It contains 21% nitrogen and 24% sulphur, two essential nutrients for plant growth. Unlike urea, the nitrogen in ammonium sulphate exists in ammonium form, which can be directly absorbed by crop roots after being converted in soil. This feature makes it suitable for alkaline soils, as ammonium ions help reduce soil pH and improve nutrient availability.
Agricultural Applications and Soil Management
In agriculture, Ammonium Sulphate is recognized as a premier nitrogen and sulfur fertilizer. It provides 21% nitrogen in the ammonium form, which is readily absorbed by crop roots, alongside 24% sulfur essential for plant protein synthesis.
One of its most valuable agronomic properties is its acid-forming nature. When applied to alkaline or calcareous soils, the oxidation of ammonium helps lower soil pH, making tightly bound micronutrients such as iron and phosphorus much more accessible to crops. It is extensively utilized for growing high-demand crops like rice, wheat, corn, and potatoes, promoting robust vegetative growth and maximizing harvest yields.
Industrial Uses and Biochemical Applications
Beyond farming, Ammonium Sulphate serves numerous industrial functions. It is frequently employed as a flame retardant in commercial products, a wood preservative, and a chemical processing aid in textile manufacturing.
In biochemistry and molecular biology, purified forms of Ammonium Sulphate are heavily utilized for protein precipitation and purification through a technique known as "salting out." Additionally, it finds use in water treatment plants as a chlorine stabilizer and in the food industry as a dough conditioner. From enriching agricultural soils to advancing biochemical research, Ammonium Sulphate remains an exceptionally versatile and vital chemical compound.
